Should You Go to the ER for a Tooth Infection? What a Frisco Dentist Wants You to Know

Tooth infections send an estimated 2 million adults to emergency rooms in the U.S. every year. Most of them leave with something for the pain and a referral. The tooth itself is still infected.
What will the ER actually do for a tooth infection?
Antibiotics to control the spread, pain medication for relief, and an assessment of whether the infection has become life-threatening (spreading toward your airway or your eye). What an ER generally can’t do is drain, treat, or extract the infected tooth. That takes a dentist.
So when is a tooth infection a true ER-level emergency?

What happens if I go to the ER first?
You’ll likely leave with antibiotics, pain medication, and instructions to see a dentist as soon as possible. The infection and the tooth causing it still need dental treatment after that. Going to a dentist first, when your symptoms allow it, skips a step and gets you treated faster.
Why does an untreated tooth infection matter so much?
An abscessed tooth is a bacterial infection. It can spread to surrounding tissue, your jaw, and in rare but serious cases, your bloodstream or airway. That’s the reason facial swelling or fever changes the calculus from “wait it out” to “go now.”
What if I don’t have a regular dentist and this happens on a weekend?
We’re open Saturdays and take walk-ins for exactly this. You don’t need to already be an established patient to be seen.
Can antibiotics alone cure a tooth infection?
No. They control the spread. The source, usually an infected tooth needing a root canal or extraction, still needs treatment, or the infection tends to come back.

Phenomenal crew and experience! I scheduled an emergency visit for my daughter due to gum swelling. Upon arrival, we were met with utmost care and attention which led to one of the best dental visits we’ve ever had. After x-rays and careful inspection we learned that her mollars were coming in. What began as a hurried emergency visit brought us our new family dentist. Couldn’t recommend more.

Dr. Ajay and his team get a Gold Star for bedside manners. As someone with a lot of anxiety when it comes to Dental procedures, they made sure i was comfortable before we started. From X rays to exams, they made sure they checked with me every step of the way to make sure i was comfortable.

Is a tooth infection a medical emergency?
It can become one if swelling spreads toward the airway or eye, or if you have a fever with facial swelling. Those need the ER immediately.
Can urgent care treat a tooth infection?
Urgent care can sometimes prescribe antibiotics similarly to an ER, but like the ER, it can’t treat the tooth itself.
How fast does a tooth infection spread?
It varies, but facial swelling that’s visibly increasing over hours, not days, is a sign to seek emergency care right away.
Will I need a root canal or extraction after the infection is controlled?
Usually, yes. One of those two treatments addresses the source, so the infection doesn’t return.
